At the school. RACHEL is holding an uprooted sapling, GLEN watches.

RACHEL: What a great thing. What a great stir for break-up day. Killing a young tree. Good stir, eh? Got your camera here? This should be the centre of the story.

GLEN: This story…

RACHEL: What?

GLEN: My Dad says we shouldn’t go ahead with it.

RACHEL: Does he say why?

GLEN: It’s not healthy. He thinks you’re obsessed.

RACHEL: What does your Mum think?

GLEN: She thinks I should be at the Grammar School. Like she always wanted.

RACHEL: And what do you think, Glen? About this tree. About someone uprooting it after the girls took up a collection to have it planted there. In her memory. What do you think?

GLEN: I’ll get my camera.

RACHEL: Good.

GLEN: If we’re going to do this in the holidays…

RACHEL: Yes?

GLEN: That means going over to Black Rock.

RACHEL: You don’t need injections.

GLEN: Piss off. I mean, I’ll be walking round with a camera. Am I going to get my head punched in?

RACHEL: Maybe we both will.

GLEN: What do you get called? By the kids that hate you?

RACHEL: I don’t know, Conch, swot, sometimes. Bitch. Rich bitch, a couple of times. Not much else. Not much that I hear, anyway.

GLEN: I keep a list. Twenty-three names over the last year. I suppose I’ll collect a few more by the end of the summer.

RACHEL: You don’t have to do this.

GLEN: I want to do it. At least I think I do. We’ll put this back by the hole, and I’ll get my camera.

RACHEL: After we shoot it, we’re going to put it back in the ground. The roots are all right, I think. Do you know much about trees?

MALE VOICE: Scott Richard Abbott…sixteen years old… July 7th, 1975… 15 Black Rock Drive, Black Rock Point… on the night of October 26th…
